Design Psychology Mini Course

This course is a condensed version of a 16 week course normally taught through a college interior design program. We will cover a wide range of design psychology topics outlined below and you will leave with a comprehensive introduction into this very special field. I keep it fun and lighthearted but packed with great information for design professionals or anyone looking to deepen their understanding of design and space psychology.

The presentation is approximately 60 min long, with time at the end for questions and discussion. Depending on the class size and engagement from the group, the total presentation with questions is typically around 90 minutes. The slides include a combination of visual imagery and examples to illustrate concepts, typed descriptions along with time for interaction throughout through shared stories and guided class exercises.

Here is a breakdown of the content we will cover:

  • Overview of Design Psychology

  • Human attachment styles and how they relate to our design preferences

  • The psychology behind prints and color

  • How we make choices and form perceptions related to design

  • How behaviors are shaped by design

  • Instincts and survival skills from our ancestral past and how they impact our design choices

  • The role of nature in design

  • Exercises to achieve a home designed for optimal mental health
